Each ledger is a single file on your disk, ending in .doublebooks. You can see it in your file manager, copy it to a backup drive, and open it on another computer. It works offline and needs no account. It is not ready to download yet.

What the desktop app gives you

One file for each ledger: Your personal books and each business you run live in their own file. Copy one to another computer and it opens with everything in it.
Works offline: No account and no connection required. The app runs entirely on your own machine.
Free to keep: The desktop app is free for as long as you use it. Online sync is the paid part, and it is optional.
Export always works: Take a full copy of any ledger with you at any time. Your data is never locked in.
